Title: How can I create a product that is a group of other products?
Post by: CreativeProStudio on October 29, 2013, 22:27:51 PM
Joomla Version: 2.5.14
VirtueMart Version: 2.0.24

I'm setting up a website for a bookseller and in addition to individual books, they sell sets of books. These sets are "built" from the individual books in their catalog. Is there a way in VirtueMart to create a product that is a group of other products? For example, can I have SKU #HS422 contain HB123, HB124, HB125, and HB126? Then, in the product details have a list of the individual books in the set with links to each?

I thought about doing it with categories, but I think that will get unwieldy pretty quickly since there are about 300 sets.

Have you taken a look at Product Builder? http://breakdesigns.net/virtuemart-product-builder

I sort of do a similar thing to this, but opted for the difficult route in the end as there is no way of doing it in Virtuemart by default & product builder was not for me also.

I set up a new KIT product, with a new SKU, image of the kit and description & then use stockable variants to create lots of new children products of the kit.
This is because in my case there are lots of different options and flavours to choose from.
The new children products have the same SKU as there original products, but I prefix with a K.

So in summary, I ended up created 100's of new products just to get these kits working, but they work well for me, look great in VM front end, this may not be the best solution for you as it is a bit fiddly to manage, but with the help of using CSVi, it can be done!

Do have a look at product builder tho as Deb suggested as this may be a good option for you?

Thank you for the suggestions! I may give Product Builder a try. It looks like it will do what I need it to.

Thanks again! :)

I'll follow up with the results.
