In the admin after adding Custom Fields I cant order them by the ordering field as you would expect.

what version are you using?
the ordering of custom fields is "drag & drop" inside the product now
I am using 2.0.20b and im talking about the full list of custom fields under
products > Custom Fields
not within a product.
so really your saying that ordering has no relation to the display for a particular product?
The ordering there has only an effect if you create a group.
The ordering else is created when you use a custom prototype within a product. Use the customfields within the product, use dragn drop and explain how the ordering can be transferred? It makes only sense for groups.
Well i assumed maybe the ordering may be used during an IMPORT as a default for the custom fields.
If the ordering on that page doesnt really matter then mayge the sort option for it shoudl be removed?

I am sorry, but did you tried what I read? When you go to the product customfields, you add every customfield ONE by ONE. So the ordering is done by you directly. How should the system know that it should it reorder for you?
and of course it makes sense, if you create a GROUP of customfields. Because then you choose the group in the product edit and then there a lot customfields added at once. There is an order in it then. So there is no reason to remove it.

I have troubles ordering the custom fields and i can tell you that the subject is not closed. Joomla 2.5.14, Virtuemart 2.0.24
I have created a Group of custom fields, all are VMplugins if this is important. I cannot order in backend in the Custom Field regardless if I'm filtering after the parent or not. Even the displaying is not working if i press to be ordered upwards or downwards... The list remains unchanged.
I have tried to order manually by inserting the desired order position in every box and save. no success! The main trouble is that the order, after defining all custom fields, is not satisfactory and is much too much trouble if i have to reorder the fields into product defining page every time i add a product with that parent custom field.
Strange is that the display ordering in the custom fields page is not working after ID column neither. The column header display that is active but is not... Again, in both "all" custom fields page and in a "group filtered" custom fields page.

What 3rd party extensions do you have?
I'm using VM 2.0.24 on Joomla 2.5.14.
When I try to use the drag and drop ordering in the admin for product_customfields, I do see the ordering being switched up on the page, but then the Action buttons no longer work. I can't Save, or Save & Close or even Cancel after I've used the drag and drop ordering. Very strange. These buttons are otherwise working fine for me.
Help?

The the ordering for groups is not stored?
The same problem here. The ordering is stored, but fields are not ordered by these numbers. Both in Custom fields page and by adding group to product the order stays the same as you see here:

This is the same order as I see in virtuemart_customs table. Of course I can change the order when I add the field group to product, but that's not user friendly, because I need to change the order every time I add the group to product, and I have about 500 products that need the custom fields group to be added.
I am using the latest VM and Joomla 2.5.17
Committed for the 2.0.27. I really wonder how we lost it. that stuff was already written. Svn committ error assumingly.

I am using J2.5.19, VM2.0.26d and am having the same problem.
I have a group of CF's that I cant order in the back end. I can see that I can reorder these when adding them to a product, but I am adding a lot of products and dont want to reorder these ever time.
What code needs to be changed in 2.0.26d, to fix this please?
