Title: Where are release announcements made?
Post by: cr33 on February 16, 2013, 21:13:24 PM
I've hunted all over the place for a way to receive an email when a new version of VM is released - can someone help me out?  I post here since searching for 'virtuemart release announcement' lists this forum as a likely candidate.  Yet no mention of 2.0.18 :(

The update notification in the backend only lists the next version.  eg, a site that was running 2.0.12 continuously prompted me to upgrade to 2.0.14.  I looked at 2.0.14 and since it wasn't a security release, we elected to skip it (we have customized a few files that are not possible to override, at least not easily).  In the meantime, 2.0.16-2.0.18 were released, and those did have security fixes.  Yet the update notification continued to display 2.0.14 as the update candidate.

Thanks!

We look directly here http://dev.virtuemart.net/projects/virtuemart/files

To be honest I still have no clue on how they update things and how the updater works.

We are on version 2.018b, updated the AIO and VM itself 2 weeks ago when it was released and still warns us to update to an older version.

Actually most people don't even know what is the latest stable release cause of this.

Releases are announced on twitter - @virtuemart  and  on http://forum.virtuemart.net/index.php?board=136.0

News is published also on  http://virtuemart.net/news/ where you can also subscribe - but this page is a little behind as a completely revised home website is being finalised.

The signal-to-noise on twitter is too high, and I wouldn't want to subscribe to an entire board either - in both cases it's too easy to miss the announcement among all the other unrelated items.

There ought to be a dedicated channel for release announcements.  It could be its own board, a mailing list, RSS, whatever - but it needs to be mainly security alerts and release notes.

Failing that, at least the update notification in the VM control panel ought to report the *latest* release, not just the *next* release.

c33 it is quite easy,

The normal people should look ONLY on the vm control panel.

Additionally for every new version in this control panel, you can find a news for it.

But all the other versions are handled in the forum. The reason is the quality, versions in the forum are RCs. All important releases are discussed here https://forum.virtuemart.net/index.php?board=136.0 .

There are various subrelease which I create for testers and customers. This are only provided by skype, you dont need em. If you interested in the development, watch the forum.

Still dont understand how updates work here, if 2.0.18b and 2.018c are marked as stable why is my system telling me:

A new version is available
Installed version 2.0.18b
Latest version 2.0.18a

I never know what is the latest official release.

Edit, read your reply here http://forum.virtuemart.net/index.php?topic=113103.0;topicseen

You are right, they are marked as stable, cause they use even numbers. What we mean in this case is that we did not implement big new featurs, or just see it as a bugfix. For example the manufacturers for the calculation rules looks like a big new feature, but in fact the developer used exactly our pattern, so it is more like an extension. But I forgot to add the file for the table,.. stupid error. Fast to fix and not a big deal for someone who is following the forum. But the normal shopowner,. .should not be bothered with things like this.

So the release notes for 2.0.24 are missing from the upgrade screen.  I went to the VM site and clicked the 'News' menu item, but that takes you to http://virtuemart.net/news/latest-news .  This should be changed, so clicking the top-level 'News' menu item takes you to http://virtuemart.net/news/list-all-news.  I had to search the forums to find the release notes :/

And also, I'd like to repeat the request: it would be nice to be able to sign up for an email alert sent when a new release is out.  No other items, just new releases or security alerts.  If wishes were fishes... ;)

I got an email from the newsfeed as well as a couple of tweets from @virtuemart about it. The newspage and list of fixes was released on 30 Sept - http://virtuemart.net/news/latest-news/449-virtuemart-2-0-24-is-available-includes-sofort-banking  The subscribe form is at the bottom of http://virtuemart.net/news/list-all-news
