Lost product and data after reinstall

I had problems with my joomla site that forced me to reinstall joomla which then virtuemart was there but not fully installed.  Products and pictures were there and functioning fine but the shopping cart module was not there anymore.  I tried an upgrade which didn't fix it so I finally reinstalled virtuemart, but now all the product inventory and everything is no longer there.  The files are on the server but the program is now empty of everything.  How do I fix this problem or import all the data from the previous version of virtuemart.  Another problem is the vm modules say they are there but they are not there or fuctioning
