Shipping based on product category....

I coded the ps_checkout.php so that I have free shipping based on category, but I am using the shipping based on total module as well. Everything works fine if I add categories, but if the two free and non-free categories mix up, the shipping total will now be based on the product in the free shipping category and the product with a shipping fee. I want to program it such that the products in the free categories do not count toward the amount total in for the shipping value or at least tell it to subtract it from the total temporarily and then add it for the purpose of calculating the shipping. How should I do that? And which file/variable, should I use, would it be ps_checkout.php, shipvalue.php or shipvalue.cfg.php? Also, if you know another way to redo the whole thing or maybe use another module to get free shipping based on categories, thats fine too, let me know.

i have tried ptype, but when i use the bypass field, which i believe i am using correctly:

 entering the amount for shipping in the 'Bypass Product Shipping Charge', the category number in the 'Bypass Product Group', and so forth

but it gives the customer a $0.00 shipping charge for the category in the bypass group which is not good.

might there be a solution to this?
