I often get this strange symbol added when I save a new product - it looks like this on the page £179.99.

Is there a way to get rid of it?

[EDIT] I've just noticed these characters too � - these seem to replace the £ (GBP) symbol)

What option have you set as currency value in store configuration? Try using     £
