I know that there have been several posts on this topic, but with several thousands of products to upload, I want to make sure I understand how to do it right the first time.  Can someone break down the process of creating a CSV file and how to properly upload it?

I created one on one product only as a test and it would not accept the excel csv file so i converted it to tab delimited text file and uploaded.  Virtuemart accepted this version but totally screwed up the data into unreadable categories, descriptions, etc.... 

Someone, please help me as I don't want to waste too much time on this.
