Image problems

I have just installed 1.0.7 on Joomla 1.0.10. I am running FF2 RC2. I'm having problems displaying images - both the backend Virtuemart icons and any png/tif images that I upload/attach to particular products. The availability icons also just display in words.

Is it a permissions issue? I've set everything to rwxrwxr-x (more or less).

I also can't get the cart to work - when I go to checkout I get a 'The requested URL /index.php was not found on this server.'

Great program but I need help,

Im trying to modify the image files, particularly the add to cart button and the permissions are set to not allow this. I can not change the permissions at all.

I really need an answer to this question and I hope this question does not go unanswered like so many others here.

If it is of any help the answer to this was to download Joomla Explorer and change the permissions through that.
