How to show appropriate shipping by product or quantity?

Here is the problem:

We want to offer rate calc for UPS and USPS.

But...some products are too large or heavy for USPS.

Is there a way to, for example, only show UPS shipping rates for some products, while offering the choice of UPS or USPS rates for others?

The standard shipping module can do this...

in each rate, set the weight range for a given shipper.

Then during checkout, it will only show the rates that are valid for that cart content.
